Information Romania
Romania is a republic in southeastern Europe, bordering the Black Sea, Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Ukraine and Moldova. In a territory of 238,391 km², Romania has a population of 21,790,479 (2013).
Except for Hungary and Moldova, Romanian Romania is hemmed in by Slavic countries. There is a wide variety of cultures and their influence, language and religion. Romania possesses much unspoiled nature. The continental climate (cold winters, hot summers) and a mountain range running straight through Romania, the Carpathians, provide diverse landscape types. The country also has wide sandy beaches on the Black Sea, a river delta, primeval forests and plains.
Most of the population is Romanian Orthodox, most ethnic Hungarians are Roman Catholic or Protestant (Reformed or Reformed), ethnic Germans are mostly Lutheran. The constitution guarantees freedom of religion. The Romanian language belongs to the Romance language group, making it related to Italian, French, Spanish and Portuguese. Especially in the written language many familiar words can be discovered for those who know one of these languages.
The capital Bucharest, known as Little Paris in the interwar period, is a major tourist attraction and by far the largest city in Romania. At the time of the Soviet regime, Romania occupied a distinct place in the Eastern Bloc with relatively great independence in foreign policy. Romania has been a member of NATO since 2004 and the European Union since 2007. The EU accession treaty was signed in early 2005 and implemented on Jan. 1, 2007. Romania is the sixth largest country by population and the eighth largest country in the EU by area.
